Iowa’s Swabian Hall
Iowa’s Swabian Hall
Swabian Hall swine in their purest form are only located in Baden-Wurttemberg Germany. This particular breed of swine are some of the best tasting pork in Europe. In fact, they were named the worlds best pork in 1832 then again in the 1892 World’s Fair. The interesting thing is that the Swabian Hall was the result of King Wilhelm going to China and obtaining Meishan Swine and then crossbreeding them with Russian Wild Boar that was indigenous to the country of Germany. He did this because the indigenous pork was too lean and too dry. Much the same as the current confinement, heavily muscled, super-lean hogs located in the US. He mated the Chinese Heritage Breed Meishan, which has more lard than any other pig in existence, (the Mangalitsa only comes close but does not have as much lard on its carcass when compared to the Meishan) to the Russian Wild Boar. The King was trying to get the perfect balance of fat and meat. He accomplished this feat.
We have reproduced as close to the original Swabian Hall as possible. With 150 years of genetics and many generations there are bound to be differences. We have now established the Iowa Swabian Hall here in the United States. After taste tests comparing our Swabian Hall to the Mangalitsa and Duroc from the top producers in the country we are confident that we have a hit on our hands. The fat is nearly perfect in its balance. Not too fat, and not too lean. Making the Swabian Hall one of the most sought after gourmet pigs. Follow our site here as we explain how we are doing this and learn a little along the way. It has been extremely interesting doing the research and obtaining the breeding pairs. The pics above are the first ever published of the Swabian Hall. These are F1’s and we will be breeding them to F1 unrelated swine to produce our Pure Bred Swabian Hall.
